GET TO KNOW COURTNEY

Hi, I’m Courtney Cooper, MA, Resident in Counseling, working under the license of Dr. Alexandra Daniel.

Clients on my caseload are frequently referred to me because of their need for something in addition to talk therapy: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). It’s most renowned for addressing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, however, its applications extend to many other mental health concerns as well, for example, depression, grief, anxiety. EMDR is used once emotion regulation skills have been developed, allowing individuals to access and reprocess traumatic memories safely.

How does EMDR work? Instead of extensive verbal discussion, EMDR focuses on altering emotions, thoughts, & behaviors linked to distressing experiences. In session, I will guide you through bilateral stimulation in the form of eye movements or music while processing these memories. The goal is to reprocess the traumatic memory and reduce its emotional impact.

I've been administering this form of therapy since becoming trained in 2019. Recently, I was part of a small team that traveled to Ukraine (Sept. 2024), where we provided a conference focusing on many aspects of trauma. During that time, EMDR was provided in a silent group format to 50 participants. Unlike other therapy modalities, you don't have to talk during EMDR to heal. You don't have to give those incredibly personal details of your trauma story- you choose what and if you want to share. I've seen many people overcome the negative beliefs they've held against themselves for so long, eliminating ruminating thoughts, and, perhaps for the first time in their lives, finding freedom from the trauma that has held them captive for so long.
